Weekly RHYTHM: Reality
“What is real? How do you define ‘real’? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then ‘real’ is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.” ~ Morpheus (The Matrix)
As Laurence Fishburne once famously stated, reality is merely a matter of signals our brain receives. Which begs the question - who’s sending these signals in the first place? Much like a TV screen, our mind displays the culmination of these signals to create what we interpret as reality. What do I mean interpret?
None of us (this author included) are completely without bias. Each and everyone of us have lived unique lives, which have developed specific emotional responses and patterns of belief. In every moment of every day we are creating a reality. Yet are we sending and receiving signals OR are we receiving signals sent by others? As I write this, for example, it is Easter Sunday. Raised as a Catholic, for me, this meant church services and pray, followed by Easter eggs and chocolate bunnies. A bias. Yet this same day can mean monumentally different things for others. For Wiccans, it is Ostara, while for many Hindi, it is Holi.
This week, we question the nature of our reality. Am I living a life in accordance with my own Truth, or fulfilling someone else’s desires?
In recognizing what is what, and which is authentically ours, we are presented with the opportunity to choose differently in our lives. Indeed, we are tasked with the responsibility of creating the reality of our dreams, which first - obviously - requires us to dream a new reality.
